Have a question about this? Bring it to Hypatia.
The beliefs about money that run your financial life are almost never the ones you chose. They are the ones you absorbed before you knew you were absorbing them.
In my family, money was scarce and its absence was frightening. In your family it may have been plentiful and corrupting, or scarce and shameful, or never discussed, or the source of every argument. Whatever the atmosphere was, you learned something from it — not as an abstract proposition but as a felt truth about what money is and what it means to have it or not have it.
These learned truths are often not examined. They run in the background, producing financial behavior that the conscious mind rationalizes afterward.
The question I am asking is not "what is wrong with your money beliefs?" It is "what did you learn, from whom, and does it survive honest examination?" Some of it will. Some of it will not. The point is to know the difference.
