People come to me wanting to work on their mind and they forget to bring their body.
The mind and the body are not two things that happen to be in the same person. They are one system. The mind that cannot settle, the attention that fractures, the anxiety that runs on a loop — these are not purely mental phenomena. They are physical events happening in a body that is in a particular state.
When I ask someone where the anxiety lives in their body, they are often surprised by the question. They have been trying to think their way through it. But the anxiety has an address: the chest, the jaw, the stomach, the specific holding in the shoulders.
This is not metaphor. The nervous system records and maintains patterns. The body that has been under chronic stress develops a baseline tension that it returns to automatically.
Check in with your body right now. Where is the tension? What is the quality of your breath? The body's report is often more accurate than the mind's story about how you are doing.
