The Work in the Drawer

Ask Hypatia

You have something in a drawer. A folder. A hard drive with a name that means something only to you.

You made it, or part of it, or started it and stopped. You have not shown it to anyone. You have very good reasons for this. It is not finished. It is not ready. The timing is not right. You are not sure it is good enough.

These reasons are all serving the same purpose: to keep you from finding out what happens when another person encounters the work.

What is the danger in that? Usually: you will find out the work is not what you hoped. Or it will confirm something the voice in your head has been saying for years.

But here is what I have also seen: the person who shows the work to one careful reader, and survives the reading — that person almost always continues. The showing breaks something that the hiding was maintaining. The work can no longer be the imaginary perfect object it has become in the drawer. It is simply what it is: a real thing made by a real person.

The work does not need to be alone anymore.
