The most important question I can ask someone who is working on reclaiming their calling is not "what do you love?" They usually know that already. It is not "what is getting in the way?" They can describe the obstacles in detail.
The question is: what did you do with the calling last Tuesday?
Not what you felt about it. Not what you understand about it. Not what you plan to do when the conditions are better. What did you actually do with it on an ordinary weekday in the middle of a regular week?
I call this the Tuesday test, and it is the most reliable indicator I know of whether a devotion is becoming a life or remaining an intention.
The life organized around the calling shows up on Tuesday. Not perfectly — Tuesday has its own complications. But the calling has a place in it. Thirty minutes. A paragraph. One conversation that was not about something else.
The intention shows up on Tuesday as a feeling of guilt and a plan for next week.
